Was it hard being the new kid?
For some people, absolutely. The night before school they're laying awake wondering what to wear, whether they'll fit in, whether they're going to get lost, or worse... whether something embarrassing is going to happen in front of the entire school on Day One.
Me? I wasn't that kid. I made friends pretty easily and usually found myself floating between more than one group. Mostly jocks and stoners. Then eventually just stoners.
Being the new kid was pretty simple for me. All I had to do was find the smoking section. Now before anybody freaks out, this was the 80s. Every school had unofficial gathering places.
You knew exactly where the smokers hung out, where the skaters hung out, where the athletes hung out, where the troublemakers hung out. Schools had social maps long before GPS. The funny thing about being the new kid is that everybody experiences the same school completely differently.
For some kids, it was terrifying. For others, it was an opportunity. Nobody knew your reputation. Nobody knew your mistakes. Nobody knew who you dated, what you looked like last year, or whether you were cool or not. You got a fresh start. The question is... what did you do with it? Were you terrified? Were you excited?
Did you reinvent yourself? Or did you spend the first week trying not to throw up in the cafeteria? Tonight we're talking about being the new kid, the longest walk in school history, finding your people, surviving lunch, and whether changing schools was the worst thing that ever happened to you... or the best thing.

The funny thing about Gen X summers wasn't what we did. It was the freedom. For a few months every year, we belonged entirely to ourselves. No schedules. No phones. No GPS. No notifications. Just bikes, friends, and the promise that tomorrow would probably be another great day. And maybe that's why we still remember those summers so vividly

Gen X childhood sounds completely made up because honestly… nobody would let kids do this stuff now.

They just poured the milk with the faces on it and said, “Eat.” Meanwhile, at the grocery store: Elvis was alive Aliens were breeding in Nebraska Bat Boy had citizenship And every checkout magazine screamed like a carnival haunted by Carl Sagan The National Enquirer, Weekly World News, Globe — the original algorithm of fear, gossip, fantasy, and national panic, curated by whoever was closest to the cash register. So yeah, while today’s kids wake up to pastel self-care and gluten-free calm, we were mainlining true crime before recess. And the part that sticks like stale Corn Pops? Out of 200 milk-carton kids… only TWO were ever found alive. And one of them wasn’t even due to the carton. So in this episode, we’re asking the question our generation has quietly swallowed for 40 years: How does a country lose 460,000 children a year? Not historically. Not mythically. Right now. Every. Single. Year. We grew up staring at their faces. Now it’s time to say out loud what every Gen Xer still feels in their gut: WTF happened to all those kids?
